Of 32 contestants in the Worldwide Mr Gay Competition that was held in Oslo, Norway, Charl van den Berg can first. The first runner up came from Australia, with second runner up from Hong Kong, third runner up from China and though runner up from Spain.
The aim of the event was to find a global role model for young men coming to terms with their sexual orientation. According to one of the eight judges of this event Eric Butter, the president of Worldwide Mr Gay, "We want them to think ’hey, it’s OK to be gay. And he added that: “We hope we can make it easier for these young kids, and their parents, to understand what they are going through".

However the Worldwide Mr Gay Competition faced several problems. Least of them were complaints from the leaders of the Miss World pageant over the use of the "World" label. The event was renamed Worldwide Mr Gay, but organisers say they will revert to calling it Mr Gay World.
In addition, Xiaodai Muyi, Mr Gay China, that was chosen in a secret competition after authorities raided the venue where the selection was to have taken place in January. Authorities said the event did not have the proper licence, could face trouble with Chinese authorities when he returned home. He nevertheless traveled to Norway to be an example to others that he was proud of being who he was. And that is something we can learn from Xiaodai Muyi. Be proud of who you are.
