The Mr Gay South Africa contest came and went leaving Charl van den Berg with the tiara and Jose Rodrigues first runner-up and Iggy Mnisi second runner-up. The contest with was held on 28 November 2009 at the South African State Theatre in Pretoria, although there where seats available at the last minute was reasonably well attended. The real question is if the sponsors and originators alike could declare this contests which was marked as the most expensive male pageant in South Africa as financially a success.
Nevertheless, the contest was an example of commercial branding in every word. From the greeting the audience received from the Cathy Specific air-hostess in her signature baby blue outfit which took the audience to there seats to the prices that was awarded to the guys taking part in the contest.
First up was the casual wear round with apparel by True Religion, Queerly Inappropriate and sunglasses from Jean Paul Gaultier. However, Chris Macgregor took the Look of Gaultier award as well as the award for Bone Wear Model of the Year. That is not bad for a barman from Cape Town. Other prices went to Jose Rodrigues which was awarded the Mr. Kempinski award and Nate de Vries that received the Mr. Toolbox MCQP award.
